Meet Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon Professor who died of pancreatic cancer on July 24th 2008. His video, The Last Lecture, has been viral on the internet and has precipitated more honest conversations on the subject of death and dying. Randy Pausch lived to be a 47-year-old Carnegie Mellon Professor before dying from pancreatic cancer. Since his diagnosis, treatment and metastases of his disease, he had given the most important lectures of his life and touched untold people with his lectures about death and dying and life lessons. He delivered The Last Lecture at Carnegie Mellon University on September 18, 2007. His lecture was actually titled, ‘Really Achieving your Childhood Dreams’, but was dubbed ‘The Last Lecture’ as it went viral on the internet. He has continued to make television appearances on shows like Oprah and with Diane Sawyer of ABC News. Time Magazine named him one of the 100 World’s Most Influential People of 2008. He appeared on Oprah again today reprising his last lecture.

Pausch made a surprise appearance at Carnegie Mellon on May 18, 2008 to deliver the commencement speech. The video of that speech is included below. You can view his other lectures online.

Randy Pausch Biography

Randolph Frederick Pausch was born on October 23, 1960. He is 47-years-old. Pausch received a Bachelors degree in Computer Science at Brown University. He received his Doctorate degree at Carnegie Mellon University in Computer Science. He is a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Design at Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Pausch was a co-founder of the Carnegie Mellon Entertainment Technology Center and pioneered courses in Building Virtual Worlds which he taught for ten years. He created and founded the ‘Alice Software Project’. This is revolutionary software that teaches computer programing. It also provides the ability to see your projects in an interactive 3D graphics and virtual reality environment. He has written and co-authored five books and had numerous articles published. He has also served as a consultant for a number of corporations including Xerox, Walt Disney, Google.com and sits on the Board of Directors of Media Metrix, Inc.

Randy Pausch married Jai Glasgow in May 2000. They have two sons and a daughter, Dylan (6-years-old), Logan (4-years-old) and Chloe (2-years-old).

Pausch was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in August 2007. At the time he was told he had three to six months of good health left. He has said that he soon made the decision to get the most out of the time he had left. The cancer has metastasized to various organs. On May 2, 2008 he found that the cancer has metastasized to his lungs and lymph nodes in his chest.

In spite of the aggressive progression of his disease, he has continued to give a gift to the world of his wisdom and insights that really have more to do with living than with dying.
