Is there a ′Super-Osama bin Laden′ somewhere out there, behind the scenes, manipulating terrorist groups? That is the question posed in the new book, ″DUPLICITY″, by Newt Gingrich and Pete Early. Published by Center Street, a division of Hachette Book Group, Inc., it goes on sale tomorrow. Fans of the spy/political/techno thriller genre will be pleased. The plot reads like today′s headlines. Or at least those headlines from September, 2012. Instead of a presidential reelection campaign hinging on a terrorist attack on an American ambassador and consulate in Benghazi, Libya, we have such happening to an U.S. embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia. The ambassador to Somalia and an American defense contractor are captured by terrorists. The only hope for the hostages are another contractor and a Native-American Marine who escaped the terrorist assault. Plus a US Navy SEAL and a CIA analyst pitch in as well where needed. How accurate is the plot to ″DUPLICITY″?
From the first chapters we get the message. The Washington Intelligence bureaucracy is laden with ineffectual, political appointees. Even among the Old Guard of intel experts, only one has connected the dots on a potential puppet-master bent on destroying Western Civilization. Newt Gingrich and Pete Early do a fine job at setting the stage for a believable yarn. Inept politicians run amok as they face a looming election day. A State Department that cuts corners on embassy security as to not offend the locals. Even high-ranking government officials who view terrorism as a ′police/criminal′ matter rather than acknowledging fatwas calling for bloody war against the infidels.
I won′t give away too many details as to spoil your enjoyment. The characters are generally authentic as are many of the circumstances they find themselves in. There are even some nice trinkets, or eggs, too, on various technical matters. All of which points to an expert knowledge that only those on the ′Inside′ would have. You can′t get much more ′Inside′ of Washington, DC than with Newt Gingrich lighting the path. He knows where the bodies are buried, probably burying a few himself!
Yes, Newt Gingrich and Pete Early paint an accurate picture of Beltway confusion and global threats in ″DUPLICITY″. Art imitates Life in this stirring novel of page-turning excitement. Its not a bad book at all. True, ″DUPLICITY″ does not really reach the level of a Tom Clancy, ′Jack Ryan′ type of story. Nor the intrigue of a Frederick Forsyth thriller. But if you like novels that depict our ′boots-on-the-ground′ as heroes and not as baby-killing-rapists, then ″DUPLICITY″ is for you! That may offend a few ′swells′ who attend Georgetown and Manhattan cocktail parties, but who cares about them anyway? Certainly not me! I can do without them and so can you! Published by Center Street, a division of Hachette Book Group, Inc, ″DUPLICITY″ by Newt Gingrich and Pete Early goes on sale tomorrow tomorrow at book stores everywhere. And, yes, there will be a sequel!
