The world’s newest nation unvleiled its new flag and was treated to a fireworks display in its first hours of independence. Today, the population of the Kosovo captial city of Pristina stood on their cars, in the streets and braved sub-zero weather to celebrate the vote by the Kosovo legislature to declare independence from Serbia. Predicatably, Serbia and Russia opposes the move, whereas most western governments are backing the vote of the legislature to form a democratic and independent country, with a predominantly Albanian population.
PRISTINA, Kosovo (CNN) — Kosovo has formally declared its independence from Serbia and become the world’s newest state in a move opposed by Serbia and Russia but backed by many western governments.
In Kosovska Mitrovica, a Kosovar Albanian waves an Albanian flag from his rooftop Sunday.
1 of 4 Lawmakers in the legislature of the former Serbian province approved the declaration of independence at an extraordinary session Sunday afternoon. It was read out in Albanian, Serbian and English by prime minister Hashim Thaci before the approval of state symbols including Kosovar’s new national flag and anthem.
Thaci said that Kosovo was an “independent and democratic” state, adding: “From this day onwards, Kosovo is proud, independent and free.”
CNN’s Alessio Vinci, reporting from the Kosovar capital Pristina, said that thousands of Kosovo’s Albanian population had braved the freezing wind and cold to sing, dance, wave flags in the streets and light firecrackers ahead of the much anticipated vote. Some revellers were even said to be firing gunshot into the air. “It’s been like this for several hours now,” he said.
….
The disputed province is dear to the Serbs, Orthodox Christians who regard it as Serbian territory. But it is equally coveted by Kosovo’s ethnic Albanians, Muslims who have a 90 percent majority, and two years of talks on its final status ended in failure last December.
“Its status must be resolved in order for the Balkans to be stable,” President Bush told reporters during a news conference in Tanzania Sunday.
Bush said the Ahtisaari plan — named after former Finnish President Marti Ahtisaari — is the best option. The proposal would give Kosovo limited statehood under international supervision.
President Bush added that “it’s in Serbia’s interest to be aligned with Europe and the Serbian people can know that they have a friend in America.”
“We are heartened by the fact that the Kosovo government has clearly proclaimed its willingness and its desire to support Serbian rights in Kosovo,” Bush said.
Thaci said Thursday he would establish a new government office for minorities and it would protect the rights of minorities after the province declares independence.
Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has promised his country will refrain from using force against Kosovo after independence, though he has warned that Serbia will take punitive diplomatic, political, and economic measures against the province.

We poke Russia in the eye in return for what??? Nothing. No U.S. strategic interest imaginable in Kosovo.
The end of this mindless and fanatical administration cannot come soon enough.

Welcome, ye liberal enemy of freedom, prosperity, and peace.

within any given population, certain differences always exist…..what if now the the 6 ethnic tribes of the new nation want to break apart?………there is no end to fragmentation until we reach an unsustainable size.but when 95%of kosovians wants independence…it is OK..look at the faces of the youngsters……this happiness and smile is genuine..its not fake or for petty separatism …………..but isn’t is easier to live in a bigger country and enjoy both benefits………………………………………for for example
look at pathetic bengalis of bangladesh and pujabis of pakistan…………..that broke apart from india after the british left……… but the bengalis and punjabis of india are far safe, prosperous and happy…………

Bloghole – the same could be said about the US at the time of our independence. Why poke France in the eye for a bunch of rabble rousers and natives that are of little strategic importance?
Why would “democratic” Russia be against a democratic state in Kosovo? Perhaps because dictatorships hate freedom.
I would guess that you have never lived under communist rule, nor have any immediate members of your family. You wouldn’t be questioning the choice of a people to be independent of the tyranny of communism if you only knew what is was really all about.

Aniket – I think you have voiced what many feel – we would rather be poor and free than wealthy and ruled by tyrants. However, in this country, we are both wealthy and free, so why do so many of our citizens run around talking about how we should “harmonize” with the rest of the world. Why? We have the best of everything now….
February 18th, 2008 at 4:41 am
Back to bloghole – um… we helped out in Bosnia (under Clinton) and were criticized for being in an area with no startegic importance – your current stance with Kosovo. Then we get involved in the middle east and you criticize us for getting involved “only for the oil.” So which is it? Do we get invovled for humanitarian reasons or for strategic reasons? Your lack of support for our nation is telling here bloghole. This is a very small world – we cannot close off our borders and pretend that the rest of the world will go away and leave us alone. Look a Kosovan in the eye and tellhim what you just said…. I’m sure the response from him will provide a justification for reduction of his sentence ….

aniket is right. Just look how well off the Indians have it on our reservations. How dare they fight assimilation into The Borg.

MBT, you use the word “you” as a reflection of your fantasy land, not of reality. My criticism of the illegal Iraq war is that it served no U.S. strategic interest, and in fact worked in the opposite way, increasing the power and reach of both Iran and al Qaeda. This was predictable, and it is unfortunate that we have Republican idiots and fanatics making these decisions rather than responsible statesmen.
Your latest justification for foreign intervention seems to be “Clinton did something similar”. I doubt, however, that you plan to vote for Hilary. I will not try to understand the way Republicans think, because I fear that my head might explode.

You head has survived a most impressive ego without exploding thus far. I do realize that thoughts are difficult for liberals but your massive head would surely survive them once attempted.

Ummm Komrade bloghole – how is the war illegal? That statement is a reflection of the typical liberal mindset: “we don’t like it, so it is illegal.” … which goes hand-in hand with, “we think it, therefore it is!”
As for Al Qaeda, they had a wonderful stronghold in Afghanistan, which is now gone (unless, of course, you consider the Taliban to be just nice little ole’ tribal guys who just happen to like beating women to death and deriving their income from poppy sales…) – and the rats moved out to help their ‘friends’ in Iraq. I view it as a giant roach motel – the terrorists check in, and we help them “check out.”
February 19th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
MBT asks: “How is the war illegal?” I am not sure whether to waste my time engaging you on this issue. Someone who is unwilling to concede that the war was a bad idea is probably incapable of having a serious discussion of its illegality under international law.
Does MBT argue that all invasions of sovereign nations are legal under international law and thus (as a matter of tautology) this particular Iraq war must be legal? Legal even when the “foe” did not attack us and did not want war with us? Are all wars legal, MBT? Or just the ones waged by Republicans?

I just re-read MBT’s post #5. MBT thinks that America declared independence from France in 1776!
It is small wonder that a fellow with MBT’s understanding of world events would think that the *illegal* Iraq War has been good for America’s strategic position in the world.

Bloghole – its a small wonder that a fellow with Bloghole’s understanding of world events would think that MBT was a guy.
As for post #5, I was referring to France’s support of the US during the Revolutionary war. Remember Gen. LaFayette?
How is the Iraq war illegal? Congress voted for it. Oh, pardon me, the liberals don’t like it, declare it illegal, therefore it is. Silly me.
