South African runner Oscar Pistorius, who became famous during the Olympics for being the first athlete to compete with artificial limbs, has been accused by South African police with murdering his girlfriend, South African model Reeva Steenkamp.

Steenkamp allegedly entered Pistorius’ home around 3 AM; he claims that he mistook her for a burglar and shot her in the head and arm, killing her. When police showed up after neighbors reported the shots, Pistorius claimed that he believed that she was an intruder. Pistorius has been reported to be concerned about a potential break in at his home, and had a machine gun, pistol, and cricket bat in his bedroom for protection. He resides in a gated community with armed guards.Police are disputing the account given by the Paralympian. His 9mm pistol was found near her body.
Pistorius is known as Blade Runner for the prosthetic legs that permitted him to compete in track. He is currently being held without bail in a Pretoria police station. The couple began dating in November.

It sounds like someone that understands where they live. If I lived in chicago, you bet I would have weaponry in easy reach. South Africa is dangerous with a really high robbery rate. I wouldn’t take any chances either.

If you are living in a gated community, in Chicago, or another urban area, you think it is reasonable to have a pistol, a bat, and just for good measure, a machine gun at the ready?
In that case I would instruct any family members to call before entering the home because it is that mentality that results in “accidents”.
A machine gun? Who would you be expecting, Mongols?
