Mohamed Mohamud is currently on trial in Portland, Oregon for attempting to set a bomb during the city’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony in 2010. His plans, fortunately, were disrupted because of a sting that was conducted by undercover FBI agents.

Prior to his bombing, he decided to produce what the government is now terming a ‘goodbye video’ where he discusses why he planned on conducting his sabotage. The two people who filmed the video were both undercover FBI agents. Yesterday, during his trial, a video was shown of Mohamud, clad in a red scarf and a camo jacket, kneeling on a prayer rug. He cleared his throat and began speaking in Arabic. In part, he says, “To my parents, who held me back from Jihad in the cause of Allah,I say to them (by Allah) if you — if you make allies with the enemy, then Allah’s power (the glorified the exalted) will ask you about that on the day of judgment, and nothing that you do can hold me back except of the (predestiny) Allah’s hand to Allah … and (if God wills), you will see the victory … of Islam, and I pray to Allah’s (the glorified the exalted) you as well are guided.”

Mohamud is a Somali-American, and is an American citizen, although he was born in the African nation. A year prior to the Portland car-bomb plot, he was accused of date-raping an intoxicated woman in Corvallis, Oregon but was not charged. He was placed on the no-fly list and met the first FBI undercover agent the next summer.

The bombing was scheduled to take place in Portland’s Courthouse Square, where thousands of residents would be in attendance for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony. His defense attorneys are claiming that Mohamud is merely a confused young man who was led into terrorism by the FBI
