Only a few days after a devastating school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the Westboro Baptist Church has planned to protest at the funerals of these innocent children. The Westboro Baptist Church, the same group who protests at military funerals, with signs that say, “Thank God for IED’s,” will be actively protesting the funerals of 20 children and 6 adults, saying that it is God’s punishment for America’s support of Gay Rights.
Here is an interview on Fox News describing the Westboro Baptist Church:
They plan on protesting to suggest that this is God’s punishment for America’s support of Gay Rights. That these children died in the name of God, and they thank God for these innocent children’s deaths.
This brings up an interesting argument; This despicable, ugly hate group is sicking. These people are cowards, and rightfully so. But do they have the first amendment right to protest? Do they have this right, guaranteed to anybody by the first amendment of the Constitution? Several policy attempts have been made to block this group, and then this group declares their first amendment right. A question for my readers: Where does the first amendment fall in a case of hate?
“Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment,” described Shirley Phelps-Roper, spokeswoman for the Church.
Several groups have planned counter protests, similar to the Freedom Riders counter-protests to the military protests.
Pray for Newtown, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers go out the victims, their loved ones, and their entire community.
