I often make the point that trying to bring democratic values to Middle Eastern countries is akin to trying to teach my Australian Shepherd to do calculus. Well, we just got another example of this recently. In Jordan, there was a debate between two candidates.

One of the guys apparently took offense at something that the other guy said. The ensuing brouhaha occurred. First, the guy takes off his shoe and whips it at his opponent. Since the other guy or the moderator didn’t run away at that, he reaches into his jacket, and pulls out a pistol. Even that didn’t scare the other two men. Here’s the video:

A couple of points I’d like to make:

First, if you have a pistol and a shoe, why wouldn’t the gun be your go-to weapon?

Second, I think maybe our view of guns is a tad different than people in other nations. Mrs. Arriba and I were watching this, and she screams out, ‘Look, he pulled out a gun!’ I responded, ‘That’s not a gun. Let me show you a gun.’ She calmly said, ‘Don’t bother, Crocodile Dundee.’
