A meme that has been carefully managed by the Obama White House is that the president is a man of the people, not just a cool cat but one of Us. The fable has been promoted by the president’s surrogates in the media since the campaign season of 2008 when his work as a community organizer, something conservatives laughed about as rabble rousing, was redefined as sacred work of the proletariat class.
Today we learn that Barack Obama has been flying his personal barber “Zariff,” a nice Muslim man from Chicago, to the White House every two weeks like clockwork. Over the course of four years, the taxpayers have footed a cumulative bill in excess of one million dollars to give the president a haircut. Warren Buffet, meanwhile, still cuts his hair at the local barbershop in his hometown for $15 dollars. So do I, and so do you. You can read the story here.
Marketing the president as a man of the people flies in the face of what everyone plainly sees no matter how much his handlers try to change the subject. On his White House dinner table, it was leaked that Obama’s regular menu cycle includes foie gras, quiche, and raspberry sorbet. Far from the grub of the proletariat working class, Obama’s bourgeoisie cuisine is fitting of any 18th century French king.
Obama’s income over the past five years has exceeded one million dollars each year. He grew up a young man of moderate means, but he never seemed to fit in with his peers at school. Obama had few friends in Hawaii, or for that matter in Indonesia where he grew up practicing Islam. Like people often do who suddenly accumulate “new money,” the president has turned to his wealth to fill the voids in his life.
And for him it appears to be difficult to differentiate his private wealth with the public treasure which he is safeguarding at the White House. He flies his personal barber in from Chicago on your dime, because to Obama that is what rich people do. I don’t think he thinks about the public image no matter how much his campaign staff want you to believe he is one of us. He does it because he can — because he thinks that is what rich people like him do.
