In February, Nadia Lockyer, a member of the Alameda County (Cal) Board of Supervisors, and wife of Bill Lockyer, the California State Treasurer, entered a rehabilitation program following an incident in which she claimed that an ex-boyfriend had attacked her in a Newark motel room. She entered the facility because she stated that she had a number of problems; she had a chemical dependency, she had suffered injuries from being assaulted, and she had been injured in a car accident. According to her husband, his wife and himself had argued on the phone. She then looked up her old boyfriend, Steve Chikhani, a 35 year old convicted felon, and met him at the motel.

Then, last week, the plot began to thicken even more. On Friday, Ms. Lockyer announced that she was resigning from her governmental post, so that she could focus on her family and her recovery. “Today, for my child, and in the spirit of Mother’s Day and National Victims Rights’ Week, I hereby announce my resignation from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, in order that I may focus on the well-being of my child, recovery from chemical dependence and interpersonal violence, and transitioning to work in the private sector.”

Then, in a bizarre twist, Ms. Lockyer sent a series of e-mails to different media outlets including one where she said goodbye to everyone. Respondents believed that she intended to commit suicide, and dispatched police to her home, where she continues to reside with her husband (30 years older than herself) and their 8 year old son.

She then decided to be interviewed by the San Jose Mercury News. During the interview (see below), she said that she had been despondent following the car accident and a miscarriage. Then, while running for the Supervisor post, she met Chikhani, and began a relationship with him. She said that her husband feared in February that she was obsessed with him, and told her to commit suicide.

She also claimed that her husband had been supplying her with drugs to deal with her pain, leading to her addiction. She claims that she has been clean for 77 days, although she has maintained a relationship with Chikhani.

Her affair with Chikhani continued onward since 2010. When he went to prison last summer, she tried to visit him as his defense attorney, although he already had an attorney. When he was released from prison, she spent the following night and day together. She became upset in November, when she found her paramour naked with other women in bed. Later, a number of compromising photos were sent to her of herself with Chikhani, which led her to assume that she was about to be blackmailed.

It turns out now that, in June of 2010, prior to running in the general election, she entered rehab. Her husband then provided her campaign with $1.5 million for the November election, although he obviously knew that she was addicted to drugs. So now, since her husband has shown so little respect for public office, his own position as State Treasurer is in jeapordy.
