First: Derek Thomas doesn’t say “aks” in the video. Just as most Americans drop the glottal stop in the word when speaking quickly, it sounds more like “ast.” But that’s basic linguistics. (I’ll also note that Thomas is a student at Nicholls State University.) Second: Even if he did make a common mispronunciation, who cares? Does that change what may have happened? That is: if someone wrongly beat the village idiot, would it be any less wrong? Whether he’s being completely honest or not, it sounds as though there are enough witnesses to sort out the truth. But that’s not for us to guess at. Third: Even if he “provoked an out of control scene,” was the response legal, and in accord with hospital policies? Those are the important issues, not his level of education, his speech patterns, or his family connections. Fourth: His comment about suing the hospital appears to be in response to a direct question about whether he would sue – and even so, wouldn’t you consider suing? Think about it. You’re made to go the hospital, but not in police custody, so refusing to let you leave seems to you like a false arrest. You just want to leave, but someone tells you that you have to stay, then threatens you. A person has a right to refuse medical treatment. Isn’t that the kind of self-determination that we believe in defending? Would you view this differently if it was about Justice Kennedy’s nephew instead?

Valid point scorpio6614!!!! There is more to this story than what the surface media is giving the public. It will all come out in the wash!!! And yes Derek does sound uneducated utilizing the word aks instead of ask(what is up with that anyway) but you can never judge a book by its cover. I am curious to see the legal avenue this case will go.

First of all you do not get tased and beaten at a hopital for not wearing a hospital gown. Inevitably sir Derek caused an out of control scene which provoked security to take such action. Did you see the grin on his face when he said he was going to sue the hospital. He shows a large degree of ignorance. He unable to pronounce english correctly. Derek it is “ASK” not “AKS”. Lets see how far Clarence Thomas goes to assist his precious nephew!!!!
