As originally written, the states determined their senators, with the Representatives elected by popular election. That would have meant that Robert Byrd and Strom Thurmond would not have, most likely, mummified in office. Having seen, now, numerous senators with apparently more allegiance to anyone BUT their constituents, I wonder, as I stated in my initial sentence, whether repeal of the 17th amendment is not due.
