A simple question, Stacy:

Switzerland is well known as one of the most Capitalist, Federalist, business-friendly countries in the world. They have some of the lowest taxes of any country and are the wealthiest country per capita in Europe. They also have a public-private health insurance system very similar to the House bill. Why does your prediction about what a public option does to a health care system not come true in Switzerland?

Stacy, have you read my summary of the bill at all? It actually does address specific insurance company abuses, creates a national exchange for health care plans that meet minimum requirements, forces rates to be the same for everyone in the same risk pook. There are many ways this bill addresses the specific problems in the industry.

This health care bill is missing key points to eeally save tax payers. Luna, you are right about the inflated rates of insurance companies. That is what should be addressed in a true reform health care bill. Have insurance rates cap the rates that employers and individuals pay every month like a sliding scale based on salary. This is just like what insurance companies do when they determine a maximum amount allowed that they pay for services from a doctor or hospital. Let medical insurance companies cross state lines for added competition. Finally, cap off amount paid for lawsuits so we can reduce the number of needless diagnostic tests that doctors order just to cover themselves against malpractice. It seems to me this bill does not cover the real problems. This bill only creates another competitor (The Gov.) to drive down insurance prices. The employer will have to pay additional costs in taxes if they do not offer the government plan. In a year or two this will squeeze out ALL competition then we will be actually in a worse situation than we are now. Picture it, only one insurance (The Gov.) Everyone will be waiting in long lines (because much less people will want to have a career as doctors, nurses, & techs., because salaries will have to be rationed to help pay for everyone's health care) Funny thing is many people I talk to in my career are on medicaid and they are for this plan. But the biggest complaint they have is how long they wait to see a doctor I tell them wait to I join (and millions more)join their plan too!

Luna, that's hilarious!

Sound like the communists are re-branding. What that wiki article describes is in fact Marx's final communist solution in the Communist Manifesto. The government-implemented communism was only meant to be a stepping stone toward this utopian dream world.

"libertarian Socialist." HA! Makes my day, thanks.

Stacy: Why put my name in quotes? It's actually my real name. :( I hope you're not making fun of it.

Your story actually makes a good point, one that lead me to my conclusions actually. Since a hospital never turns anyone away, we already have socialized medicine. Someone has to pay those costs of the uninsured. Anyone who has insurance or pays for medical care out of pocket pays for those people.

Insurance itself is a form of collectivism. A large group pays in, regardless of how healthy they are. Then who ever is sick benefits by having their illness paid for. (Presumably.. many get dumped off their plan as soon as they get sick!) So there is an "unequal" distribution of wealth. This has led to most of the problems a government-run socialist program would bring: unfair distribution of wealth, skyrocketing costs, long lines or waiting lists, bureaucrats deciding who lives and dies, restrictions in consumer choice, and high administrative overhead.

It's already socialized, but in a profit-earning kind of way. So on top of all of the above, you can add a 15%-30% profit overhead.

I have nothing against profit. Profit motive gave us the high quality of life we enjoy today. However, when profit comes at the expense of the rights and very lives of real people, then I have a problem with it.
