well I think our current and past governments are pretty cracked up and self absorbed and way too mammalian aggressive. America was settled by explorers, mercantilist, religious zealots, puritans, slaves, runnaways, as well as technical people escaping Europe and now farmers from mexico and even Asia. All are refugees of some sort from the cultures they come from and more aggressive than average. I think that is why our foriegn policy is skewed even though in theory we are supposed peace keepers and watchdogs for the civilized world. We have become police, both to the world and a police state within. Oh, its still cushy for those who obey, but more and more are being scooped up by the criminal justice system and prison as more and more activities, behaviors, and people are criminalized. I don't think we have much insight at times, and despite our amazing economy overall, we are still very insular and self absorbed LA style. Part of the problem is we don't travel abroad enough because of our short vacations and lack of curiosity and all the travel restrictions and hassles, especially coming back into the country where you must pass through a variety of data bases and can be officially disappeared at the whim of the police or government. We work long hours and are inundated with crass commercialism and pressures to succeed and be someone. Its ruining family after family and we have an entire underclass now of poor, criminal youth gangs, and the lost souls that fill our urban pockets and rural parishes. I think the State Department thinks it means well, but when I watch their briefings they seem a bunch of arrogant di##s. One thing is for sure, the citizens are paying for a hugmongous Government that tells them then what to do. Its the best form of government corporations can buy. There is a huge inner financial corruption that bubbles up now and again whether it be the tech or mortgage bubbles. Its embarrassing how much worthless paper we sold to the rest of the world to finance the huge CEO and all their management and rainmaking teams payouts. Its not the way I would run things but nobody cares.

Brian,

"The georgian president appears fairly manipulative on tv"

Right on. I saw a couple of his interviews - if anyone buys them, they're being had. He treats Americans as dummies, who will commit $$$ and troops in a heartbeat if they hear the words "democracy", "freedom", "my small European country" and "drunk Russian soldiers" in the same sentence. Plus, he makes very believable moves with his hands when he talks about (imaginary) bombs falling on Tbilisi.
I am as appalled by Putin's Russia as anyone is, but - c'mon, this Georgian president guy is so clearly a giant manipulative phony, it's not even funny. It's just sad that Bush could so clearly see Putin's soul through his eye, and couldn't see a swaggering nationalistic nascent dictator that Saakashvili is.

"This may well have prevented a major global disaster and we should be greatful for that. "

Yea right.
Who knows who they're offing all the old plutonium/uranium to.
Not to mention them selling arms to our enemies and playing grab a$$ with Iran.

But now russia has just threatened to rearm its black sea fleet with nuclear warheads. Great, just great. We crowed a paranoid state just enough to get them to do exactly what we didn't want them to do. Another administration success story.
