Well during the Carter days CEO's didn't get paid in the hundreds of millions or tens of millions of dollars and various deferred compensation schemes. There were no CDO's, SIV's or bogus subprime mortgages en-masse with the rating agencys calling the AAA. I don't see being tethered to 24-7 electronic communication with the job is such a good or healthy thing. I get 1-2 calls from work even on my days off, yeah the place that cancelled our pension and disability plans years back.
Brazil has a very active and working biofuel program coupled with high mileage efficency in its cars. It works, but needs further analysis to compare with the great wonder we got. I have never been in a walmart because it sounds like it might be more fun to get my teeth cleaned. Agree though that most of the kids working in those big box stores have it easy as they are pretty easy low paying jobs. I am not sure how it is unloading the trucks though, but I assume they come out in palate stacks and sorted by motorized machines. If they are unionized walmart is going to lose a lot of money. Walmart is stuck with the necessary human evil element and you can bet some calculating people want to unionize it. But then walmart executives and their bigger stockholders, especially a few years back made tons, and would it be so bad to see some of that go to workers? But then this is capitalism where capital rules and humans are just hired to do a "job" as cheaply as possible. Do the rich want to see their cleverly won money trickle down to the unwashed masses. A lot depends which side of the fence your on frankly. There is no right way really. Prices will go up, profits will go down, and it could threaten their whole business model. In the past decade all the big box stores and grocerys have managed to drop their workers pay down two to three tiers. A grocery cashier who use to make $23 an hour in 1996 is making $13-15 an hour now. Factor in inflation and in 2008 dollars they are making more like $8-9 today minus any pension plans they may have held back in 1996. That is how top executives make the millions. That is how the big stockholders, usually banks and funds make the big money. Its all been funneled up to them from down below. Trickle down was never that. Its trickle up and they got us to vote against our self interest. Employees are slaves, so if walmart wants to have tis employees attend their union busting meetings they can claim its part of the job to remain a viable company. I don't know where $8 an hour employees could become so "uppity" to think they have some special rights the rest of us don't have either. I am neutral.

"The fact is, despite what you libs want to hear, Wal-mart is probably the best welfare agency this country has."

Yea, you can stand around and do nothing and get paid for it.
I'm noy trying to be heartless but I swear I have never seen such a lazy group of employees in my life. (the majority of them)

"didn’t have to wear a beeper or cell phone so you were under less pressure and could have more personal times."

Uh, I dont believe that we had such technology in those days. I think around then I just switched from an 8 track to cassette.

Carters period was also good for a bicycle mechanic and the guy selling oranges at the gas line.
It was really good if you were a corn farmer recieving illegal subsidies which helped pave the way for the bio fuels that are raping us at the market today.

Jimmy Carter's times were good for a newly graduating college student with a degree who got a professional type job, say a nurse, or went into the service as an officer say the air force. The 35 hour work week was standard, a month's paid vacation was standard, health benifits, and a retirement pension was standard, and 3-5 personal days were standard. You could take your vacation without worrying about being fired. You didn't have to wear a beeper or cell phone so you were under less pressure and could have more personal times. The war on drugs hadn't taken hold yet so the level of paranoia was much less, even getting a dui required you actually be drunk and behaving badly. Lawsuits were a fraction of what they are today. Plus you could take your lunch hour and not be bothered. Some offices even allowed workers to drink a cocktail or three on their friday lunch(causal day) and work a short afternoon and go home early. Conference calls were rare and there were fewer mandatory meetings or mandatory classes for certification on some topic or minimally acquired skill. Employers didn't do background checks then other than check a resume. They did no legal or credit checks in the vast majority of jobs. They didn't drug screen all workers either. I think those were just friendlier times and people had more freedom then.
