The day of Super Bowl 2013, or Super Bowl XLVII (that is 47 for you non-Latin readers), is finally here! So it is time to make some Super Bowl predictions. After two weeks of hype, mostly centering around the battle of the Harbaugh brothers, Ray Lewis and deer antler spray, and the usual Super Bowl commercial controversies, we will now see what happens on the playing field. So who will triumph today at the New Orleans Super Bowl? The San Francisco 49ers or the Baltimore Ravens?

Obama: Don’t Let Your Sons Grow Up to Play Football

In an interview with The New Republic, President Obama stated the following: ‘I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football. And I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence. In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won’t have to examine our consciences quite as much.

I tend to be more worried about college players than NFL players in the sense that the NFL players have a union, they’re grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies. You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That’s something that I’d like to see the NCAA think about.’

Should the Redskins Change their Name?

Yesterday, in an interview with Roll Call, Tom Coles (R-OK) said that the Washington Redskins should change their name. Coles, who is a Cherokee, said that he finds the term ‘redskin’ offensive. For a long time, Coles was the only Native American in Congress; in November, another Cherokee was also elected to the House, Markwayne Mullin, (R-OK) also a Cherokee.

Manti Te’o Hoax – Catfish Victim or Scam?

I have to say that I was shocked by the news coverage the past day or so over the Manti Te′o hoax. The Notre Dame linebacker allegedly was in some sort of relationship with a woman, Lennay Kekua, whom Te′o told media types like Sports Illustrated, had died the same day as his grandmother. Then, Deadspin.com broke the story that the girlfriend was a fake, causing the college′s athletic director, Jack Swarbrick to hold a press conference Wednesday evening. As the story unfolds, there appears to be a connection with a Te′o family friend, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, to creating this fake girlfriend. Some versions explain that Te′o maybe the victim of a catfish, or catfishing, where somebody creates a fake identity online to attract a lover. One of the problems is that Te′o continued to tell his story about Lennay at least two after he had to know that the woman never existed. Some believe this was to solicit sympathy from the Joe Theismann Trophy board, which did pick Te′o as first runner-up to the prestigious honor.

Lance Armstrong Confession on Oprah, Should We Care?

On Thursday we will get to watch the Lance Armstrong confession his steroid use during the Oprah Winfrey show on her OWN Network. Oprah, herself, will be on CBS This Morning today to discuss her interview with Armstrong, who apparently won the Tour De France bicycle race several times while using performance enhancing drugs. The Associated Press reports that the Justice Department may get in on what could become a long series of legal battles for Armstrong over his doping practices and years of public denials. Yesterday, he spoke to the staff of his Livestrong charity that works to raise money and awareness for children with cancer. In the midst of this scandal, is anything Armstrong might say worth our time? Will he repent and beg forgiveness? Should we care if he does?

Political Correctness Has Ruined the Summer Olympics

The Summer Olympics is a great source of family fun. For those who don’t enjoy regular sports, they get to spend 3 weeks immersing themselves in a bunch of make-believe events, with athletes that we won’t ever hear from again for another 4 years. The rest of us are expected to be in the same room reading while this is on television, and appropriately look up to either express glee or disgust, depending on the score that judges have given the competitors. This is a miniscule price to pay for 49 weeks of household peace during the all-important baseball, football, and basketball seasons. But during this Olympics, this beautiful system, perfected over decades of marriage, has been shattered due to the political correctness that has invaded London.
