He was speaking at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation Journalism Awards, when former Vice President Cheney was asked a question from the audience about recent rulings and legislative action in Iowa and elsewhere in the country that allowed for gay couples to legally wed. I don’t think his answer surprised anyone. Do you?

Proposition 8 California Supreme Court Ruling

The California Supreme Court announced today that it is upholding the validity of Proposition 8, which amended the California constitution to ban the legal recognition of same-sex marriage in California. The Court also recognized the validity of thousands of same-sex marriages that were performed from May 2008 until the effectiveness of Proposition 8. During this time period, same-sex marriage was legal in the state of California.

Proposition 8

Proposition 8 Ruling

Proposition 8 was passed by California voters in November 2008 by a margin of 52.5% to 47.5%. The Proposition amended the state constitution to ban the legal recognition of same-sex marriages in the state of California.

Immediately following the election, numerous organizations rallied to challenge the law, and filed lawsuits claiming that Proposition 8 violated the California constitution because it deprived citizens of a fundamental right. Two groups of homosexual couples, the city of Los Angeles, and the city of San Francisco joined the lawsuit to challenge Proposition 8.

Outrage Movie: Charlie Crist, Ed Koch, Mark Foley Gay

“Outrage” is the talk of the Tribeca film festival. The documentary by filmmaker Kirby Dick claims that several politicians who vote “anti-gay” on political issues are actually gay themselves, and have had verifiable trysts with men. The documentary contains interviews with men who claim to have had sex with these “anti-gay” politicians.

Of course, many liberal media outlets are trying to keep the identities of the politicians “outed” by Outrage a secret. Some claim that sexuality (even for politicians) is a personal issue that should not be made public without consent under any circumstances. That is sheer nonsense. In the internet age, a secret can only be kept for about 5 seconds.

Below is a list of politicians that the “Outrage” film claims are gay:

Maine Same-Sex Marriage Law: Gay Marriage Legal in Maine

Today, Maine Governor John Baldacci signed a bill that will legalize same-sex marriage in Maine. The bill had passed Maine’s legislature on Tuesday.

Maine Same Sex Marriage

John Baldacci

Maine is now the fifth state in which same-sex marriage is legal. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Iowa all already allow same-sex marriage.

After the passage of Proposition 8 in California in 2008, it appeared that those supporting same-sex marriage had suffered a set back. However, in 2009, the trend appears to be toward allowing two men or two women to marry each other.

More states are likely to follow Maine’s lead. Both New Hampshire and Rhode Island are considering similar bills currently. In all likelihood, same-sex marriage will be legal in all of New England within the next year or so.

Steve Schmidt: GOP, Civil Unions, Gay Marriage

GOP strategist Steve Schmidt, who was the architect of John McCain’s presidential campaign, believes the Republican party should drop it’s opposition to gay marriage and gay rights to help grow the party. Read more about it below, see photos and watch a video.

Steve Schmidt

Steve Schmidt

Is the GOP running the risk of becoming the ‘religious party’ with its opposition to same-sex marriage? Steve Schmidt, a GOP operative for a number of top Republicans in the party including Dick Cheney, Arnold Schwarzenegger. and most recently John McCain, says the GOP needs to endorse civil unions and stop using the Bible as rationale for gay-marriage opposition or face ‘increased marginalization’.

He spoke to the DC convention for the Log Cabin Republicans — a grassroots group for gay and lesbian Republicans saying:

“If you put public policy issues to a religious test, you risk becoming a religious party. And in a free country a political party cannot be viable in the long-term if it is seen as a sectarian party.”

“If the party is seen as anti-gay, then that is injurious to its candidates” in Democrat-leaning and competitive states, he said.

Steve Schmidt, whose sister is a lesbian, predicts gay marriage will create a bigger and bigger divide between the GOP and the electorate in the years ahead. He also believes that as young voters age, they may adopt conservative views on the economy and national security, but they will not abandon liberal, social beliefs.

Interesting. Once again, social conservatives — the core of the GOP — are called out as the problem for the GOP not winning elections. The 30 states that have adopted constitutional marriage amendments have passed them by an average margin of 68-32 percent but of course that isn’t part of this new enlightened strategy.

What ever happened to Republican orthodoxy? What ever happened to core values and the right to defend them instead of casting them off to appear more hip and socially appealing? Is compromising really the way to win hearts and minds? Social conservatives! Go sit in the back of the bus — but make sure you still vote GOP and give us your money and hours and hours of volunteerism!

Personally, I don’t think social issues win elections but I do not run from them, hide them, or even ’set them aside’ because they are an integral part of my Christian belief system. I prefer we focus on taxes, bloated spending and national security. But for me, social issues become an issue when appointed uber-liberal judges become activists and forcibly insert themselves into my life.

Now, could someone remind me what Steve Schmidt did during John McCain’s failed 2008 campaign that shows he knows anything about what real Americans think? Just wondering.

Iowa Supreme Court: Gay Marriage Legal, Same-Sex Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

The Iowa Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling today that ruled that Iowa’s same-sex marriage ban violated the constitutional rights of gay and lesbian couples.

Thus, gay marriage will be legal in the state of Iowa. It is the third state in which gay marriage is now officially recognized, joining Massachussetts and Connecticut.

The Iowa state government had passed a state law declaring that marriage was legally recognizable only between a man and a woman. In 2007, Iowa district court judge Robert Hanson had ruled that the law violated the state constitution’s equal protection clause.

The Iowa Supreme Court today upheld the 2007 district court judge’s ruling that the ban violates the state constitution. With the ruling, the Iowa Supreme court issued a summary that stated that the same-sex marriage ban must be “declared void even though it may be supported by strong and deep-seated traditional beliefs and popular opinion.”
