Berlusconi Party Pictures: Berlusconi Sues El Pais

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berusconi is in deep guano again. His alleged womanizing ways just keep him in trouble, it seems. Recent rumors of an affair with an 18-year-old underwear model, Noemi Letizia, have dominated Italian news in recent weeks. That situation led to his wife, Veronica Lario, threatening to divorce him for ‘frequenting minors’.

Now, Berusconi is on the defensive again. This time he claims that his political opponents are trying to make something out of nothing in order to ruin him politically. The Spanish magazine, El Pais, has published photos of some topless women lounging around the Prime Minister’s vacation home. The women are only wearing itsy-bitsy barely there thongs.

Silvio Berlusconi: World’s Most Popular Leader?

Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi says that he is the world’s most popular leader. He currently has an approval rating of 75%, some 16 points higher than even the messiah, Barack Obama. Read more, see photos and video below.

Berlusconi Most Popular Leader

Silvio Berlusconi

I’ve heard of arrogant, I know what it looks like, we of course have our own head of state with a messiah complex; but Silvio Berlusconi takes the cake. The Prime Minister of Italy, seems to think very highly of himself; at a May day concert in Naples, Berlusconi boasted about his approval rating of over 75%. From Reuters:

“The opinion polls I know say that he (Obama) is at 59 percent. Only (Brazilian President Luiz Inacio) Lula tops 60 percent — he is at 64 percent. So mine is a record high,” he told reporters in Naples where he attended a May Day concert.

Most pundits agree that Silvio Berlusconi is a very popular figure in Italy, despite the economic crisis. Italy is expected to have an economy that will shrink by just over 4% this year. Even left leaning media outlets had his approval rating at 56% thanks to his hands on response to a massive earthquake there.

Silvio Berlusconi has complained about unfair media treatment despite having control of about 90% of the media in Italy. Silvio Berlusconi once compared himself to Jesus Christ and said that he was as popular as Napoleon, only taller.

If Silvio Berlusconi is the most popular world leader, where does that leave Mr. Obama? I mean really, isn’t he the savior of the world? Didn’t everything change when he was elected back in October? I guess somebody forgot to tell Silvio Berlusconi.

Caroline Kennedy Vatican Ambassador: Kennedy Vatican Appointment Blocked

Another embarrassing, failed appointment for President Barack Obama. The White House, hoping to favor Caroline Kennedy with the prestigeous U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican appointment, has been shut-down, according to a Vatican spokesman. See photos and a video below.

Reports vary on how the proposed-ambassadorship is happening. Senator John Kerry is reported to have asked President Obama to consider Caroline Kennedy for the ambassadorship. From there it is unclear whether the White House actually made the formal proposal to the Vatican. The Telegraph says the Vatican “has blocked the appointment of Caroline Kennedy as U.S. Ambassador.” Either the proposal was formally or informally presented, or leaked to get a Vatican response. Either way, it appears the Vatican answered with an emphatic ‘no.’

Kennedy’s support for abortion disqualified her from the position, said an Italian publication, Il Giornale. American Catholics are outraged. C. J. Doyle, the executive director of The Massachusetts Catholic Action League said: “It’s inappropriate to appoint someone who pretends to be a Catholic but rejects the fundamental teachings of the Church.”

Rome Earthquake: Italy Earthquake 2009 Devastates

A major earthquake struck near Pescara Italy and Rome in the middle of the night on Monday, April 6th. See the developing news, geological maps, photos and a breaking news video here of the 2009 Rome earthquake.

Italy earthquake

Earthquake Italy 2009!

The earthquake in central Italy struck about 50 miles northeast of Rome, 70 miles southeast of Perugia, and 70 miles directly south of Ancona. The nearest small town is Pescaro Italy in the Abruzzo region. The quake initially measured 6.3 on the Richter scale at 3:30 am local time. The official strength is still unsettled as it was earlier described as 6.7. See more details here and here.

By comparison that is about the size of the Oakland, California earthquake in 1989 which collapsed a freeway and caved a section of the Bay Bridge.

Damage reports will be slowcoming in but the earthquake is already described as ’significant’ with high damage to the old buildings in the area. It is still before 5:00 am local time, dark and cold.

At least 17 people are dead including four small children, and dozens are missing or unaccounted for. Entire building have collapsed while cracks and caved roofs are visible. We will have more damage videos, photos and reports when they become available but see the videos below.

The difference between this earthquake in Italy and a similarly sized one in Calfornia in 1989 is that we are prepared for earthquakes in California and local building ordinances require massive amounts of reinforcement. Italy is a country of stone. Stone buildings, stone houses and stone churches. Although the modern skyscrapers in Rome utilize world class engineering methods, the ancient structures in Rome and the nearby villages are very much as they were 500 years ago.

Italy is no stranger to earthquakes especially in the southern region and Sicily. An hour-drive north of Rome is not the usual place for an epicenter.

See a video below of local damage, earthquake maps and photos when available.

Lucia Riina is Salvatore Toto Riina’s Daughter

Meet Lucia Riina, the daughter of infamous Sicilian mob boss Salvatore Toto Riina. See her photos, biography and a video here.

She was married to a brave man named Vincenzo Bellomo in Corleone Sicily, which is dominating the news in my second favorite country, Italy. Sorry Obama. You are off the front page in Italy in favor of the Cosa Nostra. Lucia Riina is 28 years old while Vincenzo Bellomo is 34 years old.

There were only 100 invited guests at the wedding which did not include her father. Salvatore Toto Riina languishes in prison for crimes you can imagine. He has company because Lucia Riina’s brother and uncle sit incarcerated as well. She was given away by Giuseppe Riina, her brother was was recently released from prison. Her mother Ninetta Bagarella wore black. Bet she has seen a lot in her day.

In the tour guides they tell you that organized crime has been largely eradicated in Sicily. That is what the Italians want you to believe and they have clearly done a lot, but any tourist who has visited there can tell you otherwise. One of the telltale signs when I visit Sicily is that many towns have precisely one hotel only with no pensiones, and it is always much too large for the number of customers. It is a way to launder money on one hand in addition to cornering the market on whatever legitimate hotel business exists.

And so we see that Lucia Riina was married in an elaborate ceremony that could have been take right from The Godfather. There is a famous scene from that movie on the wedding day of Vito Corleone’s daughter in which a stream of attendees beg Marlon Brando for special favors. A mafia tradition is that the Godfather cannot refuse a request on his daughter’s wedding day.

I wonder what favors Salvatore Toto Riina granted from prison on the day of her wedding? Photos and a video are below, which gives you a great sense of the inside of a beautiful Italian church with lots of loaded weapons.

Mara Carfagna is Sexy Model Turned Italian Cabinet Minister

Meet Mara Carfagna, Italian Cabinet Minister of Equal Opportunity. Opponents of the right-wing government of Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi are using her history as a topless model to undermine the Prime Minister through rumor and not-so-subtle innuendo. Read more about the controversies, her biography and see photos and a video of her below.

People just can’t stand it when a beautiful, super hot woman is successful. They have to bring her down. Such is the problem that Italy’s equal opportunity minister is having. Mara Carfagna is young, beautiful, sexy, smart and one of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s ‘little butterflies’. That reminds me just a little of Russia’s Vladimir Putin’s Babes. Remember them?

Powerful men like beautiful women around them, and they can have them … around them that is. So don’t blame her for the nickname Berlusconi gives the beautiful women he surrounds himself with. Its. Not. Her. Fault. She’s. Beautiful.

Of course, she used to be a topless, almost naked, sexy model … but she’s quick to point out she wasn’t an ‘erotic’ model. I’m not sure what the distinction is, but it appears to be important to her. All the same, a girl has to do what a girl has to do and now she’s a perfectly respectable cabinet minister and is working her tush off for the good of the people of Italy.

She’s endured a lot of criticism and rumors. People were a little shocked when Berlusconi appointed her to the post because she had no political experience and was so young. To make matters worse, he made the comment that he’d gladly marry Ms. Carfagna if only he weren’t already married. THAT didn’t go over well with his wife of many years and mother of his children who promptly sent a letter to the newspapers demanding a public apology from him … which he promptly did.

Now, Italian newspapers have been spreading rumors about ‘relations’ between the Prime Minister and a certain cabinet minister. They suggested the former playboy leader of Italy had received oral favors from ‘an unnamed woman’ in the service of the country. This week comedian Sabina Guzzanti named that ‘unnamed minister’ as Mara Carfagna. Carfagna is NOT happy about this. In fact, she’s suing Guzzanti for the ‘vulgar and fanciful’ jokes she made at the minister’s expense.

Lord, I love European politics.

Al Gore Gets Sick At the Mention of Bill Clinton

And other random thoughts of the day.

I am beginning to believe that Gore is going to run for President in 08 despite his earlier statements. He would have already been President if it were not for something that the MSM and blogosphere completely missed. Does everyone remember the Hernandez kid who made it to FL from Cuba while his mother died in route? The Clinton administration sent the kid back. The Gore team knew, along with everyone else, that Florida was the key state for 2000 much like Ohio for 2004. The ex-patriot Cuban committee was incensed at the Clinton admin for sending the kid back. I talked to someone who is very tied into that community and he estimates that the situation cost Gore about 30,000 votes. He goes from a slim victory to a tie and the rest is history. Think about that the next time anyone makes the claim that Gore should have used Clinton more. Clinton was only going to help him in the states that he already had locked up. Clinton cost Gore the election.

Itunes, Ipod, HDTV, DVR, DLP, LCD, Plasma and now phones that do everything but change your kids diapers. The world has really changed in the last 5 years but think about the pace of change over the last 15 years. What will the next 15 be like?

So Italy declares war on the Germans in 1943 after we took over. Did they really mean it? A question inspired by my wife.

Look at the picture below. Anyone ready to take me serious yet?
