Neda Iran Video: Neda Iranian Woman Martyr, Obama Silent

Here is the Neda video and photos, a beautiful Iranian woman shot in the streets of Tehran by state militia, serving as a rallying cry for freedom in Iran and around the world. She was shot in the heart by a Basij soldier on Saturday June 20th while peacefully protesting on a sidewalk with her father, holding a sign that simply said “freedom.”

Neda: Iran Martyr, Obama Silent

Everyone but our own president seems to realize that we are on the cusp of an Iranian Revolution in Iran that Americans feel compelled to support. The silence of Barack Obama on the important democratic struggle taking place in Iran is dumbfounding.

Iranian Violate Law, Continue Protest

iranprotests

A crowd even Obama would be envious of.

A crowd even Obama would be envious of.

Once again, information is sketchy, but as you can see, the protests continue in Iran today. Reportedly over 3 million protesters in Tehran showed up today to protest the election as illegitimate. The main opposition leader Mousavi, who may have won the election, stood up on a car in the crowd and gave a speech in direction violation of a denied permit to hold this protest. The people then shouted date. “Mousavi we support you! We will die but retrieve our votes!”

More below the fold.

Iranians Continue to Protest Election Results

I’m somewhat amazed at the lack of media coverage that this story is actually getting. A quick browse through the major news outlets today had some minor coverage of the dinner jacket accepting victory, etc., but almost no mention of the continued protests and riots that are occurring in Tehran. One good place you can get coverage of what is happening in Iran is through Twitter (I would suggest www.twitterfall.com, you can monitor the trending topics in realtime). There are several bloggers in Iran who are still managing to get out some tweets about what is happening there. They absolutely dispute the fact that Ahmadinejad won the election and the fact that he claims he won the Tehran vote is ridiculous.

According to Andrew Sullivan even those who are in charge of monitoring the elections in Iran have declared these results false. Here is a quote from Sullivan’s site regarding the Grand Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani, who is in charge of monitoring the election.

GStratfor is reporting that Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, head of the Expediency Council, has resigned. Though unconfirmed, the report is saying that Rafsanjani is resigning from his position as head of the Expediencey Council, NOT his position as the leader of the Assembly of Experts, which has oversight responsibility over the office of the Supreme Leader and would be responsible for naming Ayatollah Khamenei’s successor.

Iranian Election Results 2009: Ahmadinejad Wins, Obama Excited

Who is the winner of the Iranian election? That would be President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as announced by state-run media in Iran as if we didn’t know it already. The Iranian vote count is in while the first to lend credibility to the manipulated Iranian election results was Barack Obama himself.

Ahmadinejad Wins Iranian Election

Although the Iranian election commanded worldwide interest, nobody really expected the hard-line state candidate to lose. The guy wins who Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the religious council wants to win. Amazingly everyone seems to know that except for our own young president.

Rahm Emanuel: Israel Two State Solution Demand

President Obama’s Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, warned Israel that their “moment of truth” has arrived. Israel must accept Emanuel’s Two State Solution demand with Palestine or forfeit U.S. help in dismantling Iran’s nuclear program. See photos and a video below.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Emanuel made the comments in a “closed-door meeting…with 300 major AIPAC donors.” According to IsraelToday:

Speaking at the annual Washington conference of the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Ynet quoted Emanuel as insisting that the ability to confront Iran and reach a diplomatic solution over its defiant nuclear program was solely dependent on progress toward the birth of “Palestine.

Emanuel said that with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scheduled to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama later this month, Israel now faces a moment of truth - it can either acquiesce to international demands and in return have its most serious threats dealt with, or maintain the status quo and have those threats persist.

Iran U.N. Racists: Ahmadinejad U.N. Conference Walkout

The U.N.’s conference to abate all forms of racism and intolerance got off to a rocky start when the world’s most racist Head of State, Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, blasted Israel. Many diplomats got up and walked out. You can see the exit and hear Ahmadinejad’s speech in the video below.

Gathering in Geneva today, the U.N. fancies that they can rid the world of racism. They have a document to prove it. The document is their plan. The problem is, the document ignores the atrocities of their some of their own member nations…among the guiltiest human rights abusers in the world.

The U.N., unbelievably, chose human rights abusers to head this distinguished confab. Iran is the conference Vice-Chair, Libya is the Main Chair and Cuba is the Rapporteur. Does it get anymore ridiculous than that? If the matter were not so serious, it would be hilarious.

Roxana Saberi: Iranian Spy or American Journalist in Iran?

Iranian-American journalist, Roxana Saberi, who was detained in Iran for purchasing a bottle of wine, has now been charged with spying or espionage. She is currently being held in Tehran’s Evin prison. Read her biography below, see photos and watch a video.

Roxana Saberi

Roxana Saberi, Journalist charged with spying by Iran

Roxana Saberi originally thought back in late January that she would be held by the Iranian police for just a couple of days for purchasing a bottle of wine which is banned under Islamic laws. A couple of weeks later, she was told she was being detained for ‘illegal’ news gathering or journalism without a license.

Now it seems charges of spying and espionage have been filed against her under the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She has reported ‘confessed’ to the charges but her father, who saw her this week, says that confession was made under duress.

We can imagine that.

Iran had revoked Roxana Saberi’s license to work as a journalist back in late 2006, but she chose to remain behind anyway to work on her book on the stories of everyday Iranian life. Roxana, a former Miss North Dakota, has dual citizenship because her father was born in Iran. She has now lived there for about six years.

Reportedly the Iranians often revoke permits for journalists while ignoring their work, but they obviously came to a different decision about Roxana which - coincidentally - came around the same time we swore in a new president, The One himself.

Now think about this: the Iranians have simply fallen over themselves to poke Obama in the eye since he has taken office — including on his call for ‘greater dialogue’. They are unmoveable on their position on ‘nuclear research’ and have done their best to look as generally oppositional as possible.

These spy charges against Roxana Saberi are just one more boundary test for the fumbling Obama Administration. Will Obama demand Saberi’s release publicly? He better. Will Iran use it as a bargaining chip for further concessions? Most likely.

We will soon see how Obama responds to this latest test. In the meantime, we need to keep Roxanna Saberi and her family in your prayers.
_____

Update 4/18/09: After a close-door trial, American citizen Roxana Saberi has been sentenced by the Iranian Regime, to 8 years in prison for spying - a crime she clearly did not commit. Her attorney plans to appeal the verdict but we are talking about Iran here so who knows about the effectiveness of that move.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington would ‘continue to vigorously raise our concerns to the Iranian government. Our thoughts are with her parents and family during this difficult time.’ That’s it?
_____

Update 4/19/09: It seems President Ahmadinejad’s office made public a letter written to the state prosecutor, Saeed Mortazavi, requesting that Roxana Saberi’s appeal case and that of a detained Iranian blogger, Hossein Derakhshan, be dealt with in strict accordance with the law.

“Based on the President’s insistence, please make sure that all the legal stages about the mentioned people be based on justice,” said the letter, written by Abdolreza Sheikholeslami, the presidential chief of staff. “You personally make sure that the accused people will enjoy all freedoms and legal rights to defend themselves and their rights will not be violated.”

Although Iran’s judiciary is supposed to be independent under Iran’s constitution, cases involving foreigner prisoners are always highly politicized. This is just another fresh foreign diplomacy crisis for The One’s crack policy people to deal with. So far, they have only issued statement that they are ‘deeply disappointed with the decision’ and want the situation to be ‘remedied.’

Of course the U.S. doesn’t have an embassy in Iran and negotiates its positions to the Iranians via the Swiss Embassy in Tehran.

_____

Update 4/19/09: Obama has spoken publically now on Roxana’s prison sentence of 8 years saying that he’s “gravely concerned” about her safety and well-being. He is also is calling for her release from an Iranian prison stating he is confident she was not involved in spying.

_____

Update 4/27/09: Today is Roxana Saberi’s 32nd birthday. In what has grown into an international outrage, she continues to be locked up in an Iranian prison, serving an 8 year sentence for spying. Roxana is now on a hunger strike which is incredibly alarming to her family who are waiting anxiously for some sort of break that will allow her to be returned home to the United States. Israel Missile Test: Arrow 2 Missile Defense System

A missile simulating an Iranian Shihab 3 was successfully destroyed during an anti-ballistic missile test in Israel Tuesday. The Arrow 2 ballistic missile defense system was successfully tested by Israel. Read more, see photos and video.

With North Korea testing missiles left and right, and with Iran constantly threatening to wipe Israel off the map, Israel did a little talking of their own on Tuesday. The Arrow 2 ballistic missile defense system was successfully tested on Tuesday, simulating the destruction of the Iranian Shihab 3 missile.

The Arrow 2 missile was fired around 11:00 a.m. and intercepted and destroyed a missile fired by a fighter jet simulating the Iranian missile. This was the eighteenth test of the Arrow missile and the first since the Arrow 2 had been modified. From the Jerusalem Post:

Defense officials lauded the successful launching as another indication of Israel’s defense capabilities in the face of Iran’s continued quest for a nuclear weapon. They said that the Arrow system could protect Israel from all of the missiles in Iran’s arsenal.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, congratulated the Israeli defense forces on their successful test and said that while Israel is for peace, it is good to know that they can defend themselves from an increasingly dangerous threat of Iran gaining nuclear weapons.

Iran has been trying to acquire nuclear weapons for sometime now; all the while threatening Israel with certain destruction if they were to gain that capacity. With the instability in the region, and with countries like North Korea testing missiles and firing them over innocent countries, it’s good to know that there is a country like Israel who will not hesitate to defend themselves or take further action if necessary.

North Korea tested a missile and not much condemnation was heard from the world community; it will be interesting to see how the United Nations and others react to Israel’s successful test of an Arrow 2 ballistic missile defense system. I’m sure the condemnation’s are already being written.
