Right Review: Playbook 2012 – The Right Fights Back

The editors of Politico have decided to produce a series of e-books that examine the 2012 Presidential race. The first of these, The Right Fights Back, has now been released. The book was co-authored by Mike Allen, a Politico reporter, and Evan Thomas, a Newsweek editor and reporter. Primarily, this short book (only 65 pages in e-book form) looks at the Republican nomination contest and explains why Mitt Romney secured the nomination.

Time to put ‘The Sweater’ in Mothballs

Mitt Romney swept all three GOP primaries on Tuesday. Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia were all victories. The closest of the races was the Wisconsin 2012 primary results where Romney defeated Rick Santorum by 5 points, 43% to 38%. In Maryland, Romney topped Santorum by 20 points, 49% to 29% and in DC, where Santorum was not on the ballot, Mitt took 71% of the vote with Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich winning just 12% and 11% respectively. All three competitors vow to stay in the race but Romney now has more than half of the delegates needed to secure the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. Of the 97 delegates up for grabs last night, Romney won 82. So is it time for Rick Santorum to put his sweater in mothballs?

Santorum Slipping in Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that Rick Santorum’s polling in his home state of Pennsylvania has slipped to just a two-point lead.

With four weeks to go before the Penn. Primary, Santorum is nearly tied with Mitt Romney and his numbers are “slipping rapidly” the paper reports.

The poll of 505 registered Republican voters, conducted March 20-25 in conjunction with the Tribune-Review and other media outlets, shows Santorum clinging to a small lead over Romney, 30 percent to 28 percent, within the poll’s 4.2 percent margin of error.

Previous polls showed Santorum leading Romney with a 15-point advantage.

Rick Santorum – Mitt Romney is ‘the Worst Republican’

As if he did not stir up enough trouble last week with his Etch-A-Sketch remarks, Rick Santorum has done it again this weekend in Wisconsin, calling Mitt Romney ′the worst Republican′ to face Barack Obama in November. Santorum′s reasoning for saying this is because Romney supported some of the Obama agenda, including bailouts and the Obama-Care, Affordable Health Insurance Act. Mitt is inclined to welcome global warming along with Cap-and-Trade, allowing his pals in Wall Street hedge funds to wheel and deal in carbon credits. As the White House is now spinning, Romney is also viewed as ′the Godfather of Obama-Care′, after establishing Romney-Care in his last real home state of Massachusetts.

Louisiana Primary 2012 Results in Rick Santorum Win

In case you were wondering, the Louisiana primary of 2012 results are in and Rick Santorum won the state by a very wide margin. While many were concerned over Santorum′s remarks about Mitt Romney, after Romney aide, Eric Ferhnstrom made the now famous ′Etch-A-Sketch′ gaffe, the voters did not mind. Pundits in Washington and New York, both those inside and out of the Republican Party, were all chanting doom for Santorum after they misinterpreted his remarks as meaning keeping Barack Obama in White House is preferable to electing Mitt Romney. This, of course, is not what the former Pennsylvania senator said. But the hysteria brought all of the usual suspects together to launch their attacks. The Louisiana primary, however, put an end to this, hopefully, as Santorum blew away Romney 49% to 26.7%. Newt Gingrich finished third with 15.9%, followed by Rep. Ron Paul with just 6.1%.

Santorum Gaffe: Maybe Obama is Better Than Mitt?

Santorum thought he had a pretty darn good point by saying that we need a GOP nominee that presents a clear contrast to President Obama. You could see it in the smugness on his face. But the way he said it was simply gaffetastic.

Santorum started off with a strong and proper message: “You win by giving people a choice,” he said. “You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there.”

This is right, I think. As conservatives, we need to offer the American people a clear contrast to Obama. Every time we’ve offered voters a moderate Republican we’ve lost the White House. In fact, the only clear conservative we offered to the people that lost was Barry Goldwater and he lost because conservatism was so new at the time that Americans hadn’t any real idea what Goldwater was offering them. They didn’t finally have their head-slapping moment until 1980 when Reagan appeared before them. It took from 1964 until 1980 to both convince the establishment that a conservative could win and teach the electorate about just what conservatism meant. And we were only really successful with the latter.

Illinois Primary 2012 Results – Mitt Romney Wins

It wasn′t even close. The Illinois primary results for 2012 are in and Mitt Romney easily won the state. He topped Rick Santorum, who finished second, by a dozen points, getting 47% to Santorum′s 35%. All of the networks called the race pretty much immediately based on the Illinois exit polling data. Most of the early precincts that reported in were from the Chicago area and showed Romney ahead by 25-30 points over Santorum. Add to this the fact that Santorum failed to qualify in 10 districts for delegates, and Illinois could be called a major setback for the Rick Santorum campaign. The impact of this may be revealed quickly with the upcoming primaries in Louisiana and Wisconsin approaching.
